Scottish Street Dance company THREE60 – which puts emphasis on African diasporic forms and how they shaped what we know as hip-hop styles today – has gone on tour in Scotland with their energetic performance World’s Evolution. Opening with an announcement encouraging the audience to vocalise any and all enjoyment at any point in the show THREE60 creates a joyful, more communal space within the theatre set-up.
Fusing popping, locking and krump with African and Caribbean dance tradition and hip-hop World’s Evolution displays the dancers mastery of their craft within both solo and group sequences. At times jubilant and others devastating, THREE60 has encapsulated the human experience within this 60 minute performance. The dancers are supported by a cinematic backdrop projected behind them as World’s Evolution transports us through time and space.
At times philosophical, World’s Evolution takes its audience on a journey from the dawn of humanity in Africa to the present day, encouraging us to reflect on times when people were united and communities thrived by supporting each other, how divisiveness in the modern day perpetuates self-destructive societies, and to confront our own role in creating a better world for future generations. The change starts now.
