Viking Legacy Trails

A tour of medieval Dublin visiting settlement locations from the city's rich history, a must-do for any history lovers out there and it's actually accessible!

Walk with Vikings in this super fun and informative tour around Medieval Dublin with your own Viking guide! It was wonderful to learn about the history of Dubh Linn and its Viking visitors as well as some more contemporary stories and a well deserved stop for some chips and crispy bits.

Starting at Dublin Castle Street Gate and lasting about 2 hours (though I recommend not planning anything for directly afterwards in case it runs over) at a gentle pace this walking tour led by a costumed guide and his faithful wolf-dog is a great way to see the medieval quarter while learning about its history and development from a small settlement to the sprawling city it is today.

Luna the wolf-dog is adorable and Bren is a wonderful and engaging storyteller, his passion for the history of his city is palpable and gives the tour that little something extra to make it all the more fun. An interactive and entertaining experience that mixes the history of the city with personal stories and recommendations for other things to do while visiting the six thousand year old Baile Átha Cliath.

The route is flexible; there is a section where there is a long staircase however there is a level path around that the group takes instead if someone is not able to ascend the stairs - this does not exclude any of the actual locations for the trail. The stops on the tour are planned in such a way as there is always an accessible route to get from point A to point B, even if the 'standard' route involves some steps. There are no seats along the way so if you can't stand for long periods a walker or a wheelchair is a must; I would not have managed with just my stick but had a grand time with my walker and the guys were great about meeting my needs throughout the tour.

A one-of-a-kind experience that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Dublin, especially if they are already interested in history and life in the 9th century.
